On taking students to Laguna San Ignacio, Baja California Sur, Mexico:
“Many students for the first time became an integral part of nature. This active involvement with nature, not a passive exposure to it, resulted in a keener awareness and appreciation of the natural environment; no longer were gray whales, elephant seals and pristine salt marshes with attendant bird life something that know only from fading photographs and flickering video-tapes or classroom lectures.
They began to develop a ‘conservation conscience’, and to more fully understand their place in the universe and their relationship to the animate and inanimate world around them. The infinitely complex, and the delicately balanced relationships in the natural communities were a source of increasing wonder as they learned more and more about them.”
