Final report of the 2012 gray whale research season in Laguna San Ignacio, including new information on gray whales in Bahia Magdalena, Baja California Sur, Mexico.
The Laguna San Ignacio research program in 2012 included monitoring of gray whale abundance and distribution, assessment of residence time in the area, birth intervals, acoustic monitoring, environmental education and media outreach, and the annual meeting of researchers with the community. Also in 2012 we began to monitor the use of Bahía Magdalena by gray whales, an area also visited by gray whales each winter for their breeding activities. The gray whale monitoring research is part of the joint project between the World Wildlife Fund Mexico–Telcel Alliance and the Laguna San Ignacio Ecosystem Science Program, a project of The Ocean Foundation.
